The term "action figure" was first coined by Hasbro, the multinational board game, toy, and media resource company. Hasbro planned to differentiate between "boys" toy figures and "girls" dolls when advertising. The figures are often made of plastic and based on characters from films, series, comics, books, the army, video games or historical figures. The original market for these figures consisted of boys or adult collectors. When makers of the action figures discovered that the figures were also collected as collectors' items, a distinction was made between action figures that are used as toys for boys, or action figures that are collected by adults with defined details.
