Lars Ulrich is the Danish-born, co-founding drummer and songwriter for Metallica, which he formed in Los Angeles in 1981. His path to music was set after a pivotal Deep Purple concert in 1973. After his family moved to Los Angeles, Ulrich, a former tennis prodigy, met James Hetfield through a newspaper ad and launched the band, becoming one of the pioneers of the thrash metal genre.
