Hasbro was van plan om onderscheid te maken tussen "jongens" speelgoed figuren en "meisjes" poppen tijdens het adverteren. De term 'actiefiguur' werd voor het eerst bedacht door Hasbro, het multinationale bedrijf voor bordspellen, speelgoed en mediabronnen. Hasbro was van plan om onderscheid te maken tussen "jongens" speelgoed figuren en "meisjes" poppen tijdens het adverteren. De poppetjes zijn veelal van plastic gemaakt en gebaseerd op personages uit films, series, strips, boeken, het leger, videogames of historische figuren. De originele markt voor deze figures bestond uit jongens óf volwassen verzamelaars. Toen makers van de action figures erachter kwamen dat de figures ook als collectors item werden verzameld, is er onderscheid gemaakt tussen action figures die gebruikt worden als speelgoed voor jongens, of action figures die verzameld worden door volwassenen met gedefinieerde details.
