De poppetjes zijn veelal van plastic gemaakt en gebaseerd op personages uit films, series...

Toen makers van de action figures erachter kwamen dat de figures ook als collectors item werden verzameld, is er onderscheid gemaakt tussen action figures die gebruikt worden als speelgoed voor jongens, of action figures die verzameld worden door volwassenen met gedefinieerde details.
